TAP™ was developed based upon scientific research as well as best practices from the fields of education, business and management. The TAP Elements of Success stem from research findings about effective practices in attracting, developing, motivating and retaining the highest quality teachers to the profession, and particularly to high-need schools. The core aspects of TAP are also consistent with best practices in business and industry to develop and motivate employees. These elements are:
- Multiple career paths
- Ongoing applied professional growth
- Instructionally focused accountability
- Performance-based compensation
- Bibliography
The research cited in this section was the basis of TAP. However, during the past decade, additional work has been conducted that continues to support the four elements of the TAP system.

"In the past, teachers worked mostly in isolation, often with little feedback on their performance unless there were real problems. Many teachers had no idea how they were performing in specific areas. With TAP, teachers are working together to improve their classroom instruction and they are getting timely feedback on their performance—a valuable component of teacher accountability. This is making a huge difference in the classroom!"
